Survey Reveals Widespread Issue of Secretly Taken Photos of Flight Attendants in Japan

According to a recent survey conducted by the Japan Federation of Aviation Industry Unions, around 70 percent of flight attendants in Japan reported that photos had been or likely had been taken of them without their knowledge or consent. The survey, which received responses from 1,573 flight attendants who belong to member unions, found that 38 percent of respondents said their pictures had been secretly taken, while 33 percent said they were not sure but believed it has happened.

This is a serious issue that flight attendants face, and one that requires immediate action from authorities. The survey found that most cabin crew reported face and full body pictures had been taken, while others reported being "upskirted" or having their chest or behind photographed.

Regarding how the issue was dealt with, a concerning 57 percent of flight attendants said they did nothing. Some flight attendants said they refrained from taking action because it "might offend the passenger" or that they were "afraid" to bring attention to their vulnerable position in relation to customers.

The survey also found that over half of the respondents said they were subjected to allegedly dangerous conduct, including "persistent complaints or reprimands" from passengers and encountering people "deliberately" not wearing a mask despite antivirus rules.

The Japan Federation of Aviation Industry Unions is calling for tougher penalties against those who engage in this illicit behavior. Chairman Akira Naito emphasized that "tougher penalties will deter" people from taking surreptitious photographs. The government is also considering making upskirting and secretly taking pictures of genitals punishable under the Penal Code.

It is important for authorities to take action to protect the rights and safety of flight attendants, who play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of passengers on board. Flight attendants should not have to endure such inappropriate and potentially dangerous behavior while performing their duties.
